플라톤과 어거스틴의 각주에 불과한 인생이라니...

백두(A. N. Whitehead) 할배가 서양철학사를 가리켜 요렇게 말했다.

“The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.”(A. N. Whitehead, Process and Reality [New York: The Free Press, 1978], 39)

좀 무식하게 번역하자면 다음과 같을게다.

“유럽 철학 전통에 대한 가장 안전하고 일반적인 정의는 유럽 철학이 플라톤에게 각주를 붙인 연속으로 이루진 것이다.”

그런데 오늘 다른 책을 읽다가 이 비슷한 구절을 읽고 빵 터졌다. 원문은 다음과 같다.

“In the history of western thought, few people are more influential than Augustine. His thought continues to impact theology, philosophy and politics, amongst other subjects, some sixteen hundred years after his death. It has been said that all western theology is a footnote to Augustine, and this is difficult to argue with.”

좀 거칠게 번역해 보자면 다음과 같지 않을까 싶다.

“서구 사상사에서, 어거스틴보다 많은 영향을 끼친 사람은 없다. 그의 사상은, 그의 사후 600년 여년 동안, 다른 어떤 주제들보다 신학, 철학 그리고 정치에 계속적으로 영향을 주었다.  모든 서구 신학은 어거스틴의 각주에 불과하고, 그리고 이러한 사실은 반박하기가 어렵다.”

모든 공부와 글쓰기가 이 두 할배의 글에 각주 하나 붙이는 것이라니!
